The runs are below normal and very clear. Temperatures are good. Fly hatches are not strong. |
Soft Hackles and traditional wet flies fished down stream through the runs and riffle areas. Tandem rigs would be a good choice. A nymph with an emerger above it, or a dry late in the day with an emerger trailing behind it. |

Pine is warming rapidly because of very low water and very high air temperatures. The trout will start to move toward the feeders. It will probably reach the upper 70's today. Trout are still feeding in the morning and evening. We are still waiting on the Brown Drake hatch. The Green Drakes were very heavy in their normal areas. Great spinner falls in the Cedar Run area. Fly Patterns Brown Drake nymphs with a soft hackle dropped off above the nymph would be a good start until you see reason to change. Caddis pupa with an emerger dropped off above it, or a Yellow stone fly nymph with an emerger dropped off above it. This time of year is a good time to start fishing large Yellow Stone fly Nymphs. They will start to migrate toward the shore lines to get ready for a major hatch at the end of May. |

Click the links to the left for the latest USGS Real time information on the listed streams and creeks. These streams may not be updated every day on this WEB page Latest update : 06-06-08 -10:03 PM 06-06-08 All streams are dropping and very low for this time of year. Water temperatures will be to high for trout fishing in many of the larger streams. High air temperatures are predicted over the next week. 06-01-08 Streams are dropping and warming at a faster rate over the last couple of days. Still looking good, but dropping fast. 05-29-08 Streams in the local area have dropped and warmed over the last few days. They are all slightly below normal flow rates and also cooler than normal. The tributaries are still in the 40's in the upper sections to near 60 on Pine. 05-24-08 All streams are in great shape for fishing. Cool, but that will change over the next couple of days. If you noticed the historic readings for Pine , you would have seen that it was flowing at 168 CFS in 1955. Hard to believe. Only about twice what Young Womans is flowing today.
Another group of storms moved through the area on 05-18-08 and cropped another inch of rain. We have received about two inches of rain over the last couple of days. Much less than the rest of the region. Our streams remain fishable, but some what high for good dry fly fishing. The clarity is not bad and they are dropping. The streams West and South West of us received considerably more rain then we received. Rain on 5-16-08 impacted all streams in our report area. Some are above fishing level, others are at the highest level that you would want to fish. The streams should settle very quickly. The smaller streams are fishable at this time. The largest may take a day or so. If you have been following the flow rates this spring you will notice that Pine at Cedar Run has been below normal for some time and Pine at Waterville has been above normal most of the spring, attesting to the strong flow of the tributaries from Slate Run down stream past Cammal. Good news for this summer.

Overall
Fishing Report: The following information is added to
each day so that you can view the last week of activity. 05-31-08 Warmer and drier weather is improving fishing conditions. Pine is at the perfect temperature range. Upper 50's to low 60's. The large Yellow Stone Flies are hatching and we had reports of Green Drake hatches in the Jersey Mills area. Grey Fox is still the major fly at this time. That will change shortly with the arrival of the Drakes. Lots of nice fish and good hatch conditions should provide excellent fishing over the next two weeks. 05-28-08 Improving weather conditions over the next few days should have a positive impact on fishing. Water has remained in the upper 40's to low 50's on Pine. Heavy hatches of Grey Fox over the last couple of days. Fish looking up and feeding during the heavy hatches. Only moderate surface feeding at other times. Sulphurs and Olives are keeping some surface activity going through out the day. The fly fishing should remain good at least until mid June. The Drakes could be very interesting this year. 05-23-08 Still fishable. Approaching the top limit for fly fishing. It is already dropping and the clarity is not bad. Probably one of the only big streams still fishable after the series of storms that passed through the area and region of the state. Most of the heavy and prolong rains were south west of us. We received about two inches of rain over the last couple of days. The good news is that we had a very good Gray fox hatch on Saturday afternoon. Water was some what high, but we had some good reports from fishermen fishing on the surface. 05-18-08 Streams dropped and turned to lighter color of Olive. Good reports of hatches yesterday. The Grey Fox was the most prominent, with the larger Sulphur following. Still some March Brown activity. Caddis activity is light. 05-17-07 An inch of rain on Friday brought Pine up about 9 inches. Still fishable. Olive in color and CFS doubled to 1200. Very good fishing just before dark last night. Trout were looking up and willing to feed. Some what slow most of the day. Nymphs and soft hackles were required to catch trout. Only limited surface activity during the day. 05-12-08 Pine fished moderately yesterday. Most activity was in the film or below surface, except just before dark. Pine Creek Specials are living up to their reputation as usual. Olives are starting to show up at this time. Water conditions are very good. A few more Brown trout from the state would certainly help surface activity. Lots of Rainbows feeding under the surface. 05-09-08 Pine remains about the same as far as surface activity. Usually very strong the last 30 minutes before dark. Good periods during the day, but not all day. Good activity just below the surface. Adult egg laying Caddis with an emerger drifting behind it. Some movement as the rig drifts down stream is very helpful. Spinners during the late evening are another sure bet. 05-07-08 Some periods of good surface activity in the last two days. Mostly in the evenings. March Brown's are still the best bet. Small Rusty spinners and March Brown spinners are also good patterns. Showers predicted for the next week or so. That overcast condition may help the surface activity. Stream conditions are great. 05-05-08 The mud "slug" from Thursday nights thunder storms moved down stream from Slate Run. The water is Light Olive clear and very fishable. Yesterday afternoon provided some very good fishing. The trout seem to be looking for a large pattern of the March Brown. 05-01-08 Pine is off-color this morning. Thunder storms north and west of us caused lots of run off. The stream is not high, but way off-color. The level is normal for this time of year. Usually when we get mud without increased flow rates, it doesn't take to long for it to clear. It may even be fishable by Saturday. Really good surface activity yesterday. Still a combination of Hendricksons and March Browns. 05-01-08 Good surface activity last night. Fish came to the surface with out hesitation. A combination of Blue Quills, Hendrickson's and March Browns did the trick. Hopefully this will be the beginning of some prolong surface activity. The nights are frosty, but the days are nice, and the fish are cooperating. 04-30-08 Heavy frost last night, and cool temperatures predicted for today. Hopefully it will slow the hatch progression down a bit. The hatches moved up about one week in the last couple of weeks due to low water and high air temperatures. Yesterday we had good reports on fishing under the surface, but slow on top. The mid season flies, Match Browns, Olive Caddis should get started in the next week followed by the Sulphurs. Water levels are still a little below normal, but great fishing flows. The extended weather forecast appears to be getting back to a more spring like pattern. 04-29-08 A cold front pushed through the area during the last two days. Air temperatures have dropped and the 6/10ths of an inch of rain that followed it brought the streams back to just below normal. Showers predicted for the rest of the week will help get some ground water supplies built up. pine is in good shape for fishing. May be this new rain will help the mediocre fishing that we have had. Last Thursday it looked like it was really going to pick up, but Friday was very slow. The week end was not what we had hoped. March Browns are starting to show up. Hopefully this new rain and weather conditions will help the mid season flies. Remember that it is still April. All of the hatches really advanced during this low water and very high air temperatures. We need to get it to slow down a bit. 04-29-08 Thunder storms and showers moved through the area yesterday and evening. We received between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch of rain. The small streams came up slightly, but already started to drop. Pine is still raising at this time, but should level off soon. We are still way below normal flow for this time of year. Friday was very active fishing. Trout were looking up and feeding on the surface. Saturday was much slower. Surface activity was very slow. Lots of bugs, both duns and spinners. Heavy flights of egg laying Caddis late in the day. 04-26-08 Pine came alive yesterday Fish were looking up and we had good fly numbers. Green Egg Sac caddis and Blue Quills were in the best numbers. Tan Caddis, Quill Gordon's Black Stones and Hendrickson's were a close second. Fish were looking for egg layers late in the day. 04-21-08 Pine started to give up fish yesterday when you fished emergers just under the surface. Quill Gordon's and Hendrickson's seemed to work best. Nymphs of both of those Mayflies fished deep with an emerger dropped about 24 inches above also produced well. Both methods late in the day. 04-18-08 Pine got into the 50's again yesterday. Still dropping on a daily basis. It looks great for fly fishing. The high sky is hurting fishing at this point. Overcast is predicted for this weekend. The fish should start to look up at that point. 04-17-08 Pine is still dropping and clearing. We had a warm night last night, so the water should take a good jump in temperature today. Over the next few days it should get into the optimum temperatures and flow rate. Trout started to come to the surface yesterday. Not heavy, but it is a start. The end of the month along with improved water temperatures should encourage the Hendrickson hatch. 04-16-08 Pine is dropping about 1 tenth of an inch per day. The level is getting close to very good flow conditions. We need a bit of warming and this next couple of days should solve that problem. The water temperatures should be in the 50's by this weekend. Blue Quills and Quill Gordons should get a little more intense very soon. Another week could stsrt to produce Hendricksons. 04-15-08 Pine Looks beautiful. Very light Olive to clear. Moving toward very good fly fishing conditions. Still very little surface activity. As it moves toward the 2.5 Ft. level the fish will be more prone to come up through the volume of water to feed on the surface. We should have Blue Quill's and Quill Gordon's by the week end. 04-11-08 Pine Creek It appears that Pine missed the worst of the thunder storms last night. The water is up a bit, but not bad. It is still some what high. We like to see it below the 3.0 Ft. level. The water is nice and clear. 04-10-08 Pine Creek Pine is with in a few inches of fly fishing. Still a little cool, but at least we can spend some time on the water. A good warm day would get some hatch activity going. Oddly enough, most of the streams in the area are below normal flow rate. Pine is influenced by the melting snow from the past few weeks in its upper watershed and today is the first below normal reading in a long time. Of course a thunder storm would change that very quickly! Good fishing. 04-10-08 Slate Run - Conditions are improving each day. Water is warming and dropping. Flies are starting to show. A cooling trend is forecast for the first week of trout season. That could slow things down a bit. 04-09-08 Pine is improving on a daily basis. It still will be strong on opening day, but fishable. No reports on Mayfly activity. 04-08 08 Pine is getting close to the 3.0 level. That is the beginning of fly fishing on Pine. It will still be challenging, but fishable. The fishing will improve as it drops . Good conditions are around 2.0 to 2.5. 04-04-08 Pine still running strong. It is slowly clearing, but high to fish. Cold nights are keeping the water temperatures down. Rain predicted for the next couple of days. Hopefully it will not be heavy rains as they predicted a few days ago. We are gaining on deep ground water, hopefully that will help extend 04-02-08 Pine turned reddish brown last night as more water came down stream from north of us. Very heavy showers accompanied the cold front as it passed over us late yesterday. It still has a good chance of dropping and clearing in a few days if we don't get a lot more rain. We never had a 60 degree day in all of March. But we made up for that yesterday when we hit the mid 70's for a few hours before a new cold front passed over us. Mid 30's this morning. 03-27-08 Pine is at the first good fishing level this spring. Once we get to 3 ft flow at Cedar Run gauge, fly fishing picks up. 2.5 ft. to 3.0 ft. offers the first good conditions. It allows to wade some to get to the fish. 2.0 to 2.5 allows you to move around a lot more. That flow will let you access about 50 % of the stream. !.5 to 2.0 to will let you access over 75% of the stream. That level also allows the stream to warm very quickly because of the number of rocks that are exposed at that level. 03-27-08 A very warm afternoon yesterday helped raise the water temperatures a couple degrees. The runs are at normal spring run-off, but just ready to offer some fishing. 03-27-08 Light to moderate rain fell last night. Pine came up slightly. Still a beautiful Green color. Fishermen are catching trout in the Delayed Harvest Area. 03-25-08 Pine is clearing and falling. Still running very cold for this time of year. 03-21=08 Pine was 37 degrees this morning. The first time that I saw it colder than the runs in a long time. Still off color and running very strong. Lots of Black Stone flies in the bushes. 03-21-08 Very cold last night. Finally some sun today. Cold weather predicted for the next week to week and a half. What happened to spring? Need a week with out rain before the streams are in condition to fish. 03-20-08 Moderate rain last night, just under 1 inch, along with melting snow caused the runs and Pine to jump about 2 feet. Pine is off color, but the runs are still clear. Cool, but clear weather is predicted for the week end. 05-18-07 Pine has dropped below normal and is offering some great fly fishing. March Browns and the Green Egg Sack Caddis has offered most of activity. Best fishing in many years. 05-18-07 The trees are blooming and starting to use a lot of water. Streams are starting to drop below normal. They are still a very good fishing level. 05-08-07 Great conditions. Flow rates are good and water temperatures are near perfect. Fish are not as active on the surface as we would like to see, but that could change very soon. Very good fishing under the surface. 05-08-07 Stream is in great condition. Clear , dropping and in the upper 40's to low 50's. Fly hatches are light to moderate. Coming to the end of the Blue Quills and Quill Gordons. Hendrickson's still active. Yellow Stone flies should start hatching this week 05-04-07Pine cleared to an Olive drab last night. It looks good today , but needs to drop another 9 inches to put it in the upper limits for fly fishing. Hopefully it will make it by the week end. 05-04-07The runs are clear and dropping. Still running strong, but fishable. Of course the head waters are in better conditions than the lower section. 05-02-07 High and muddy. Heavy thunder storms last night dropped a lot of water over the area. Pine should drop about 6 inches a day. Hopefully the week end will be fishable. 05-02-07 Strong thunder storms last night raised all of the streams. Slate and Cedar are clear, but you may have to fish the head waters today and tomorrow. 04-30-07 Pine had some very active fishing over the weekend. Hendrickson hatches were very heavy at some locations. We are still getting very good reports on Blue Quills and Quill Gordon's. Hatches are tending to be very strong this year. The Babb's Creek project is returning Pine to it's old hatch conditions. Still running a little strong for this time of year. 04-30-07 The runs are still fishing slow for the most part. Hatches are moderate and some short term good activity is reported. A warming trend seems to be nearing. That should give it a boost. 04-28-04 Pine is in good shape this morning. We
did not get the thunder storms that they predicted. The clarity and
level is good. Water a little cold, but acceptable. Hatch activity is
generally slow. A little sun should help. This week ends weather predictions
are for good weather.
04-26-07 Pine came up yesterday with the rain, but it already started to drop. It is Light green olive in color and looks great. Fishing was slow yesterday with some good hatch activity between periods of rain. Some March Brown's may have spotted. Thunder storms and showers could have a negative impact over the next few days. 04-24-07 Lots of wind and water during the past few days. Fish did not start surface feeding until late evening. Lots of Caddis adults during the evening. Hendrickson's have been strong. Still getting reports on Quill Gordon's and Blue Quills. Some rain in the coming forecast. 04-12-07 Light snow last night. Only 1/2 inch here in the valley. Water was in the upper 30's on both streams. #9 to be exact. Weather predictions are not very good for the next few days. Still some flies trying to hatch, but light at this time. Going to be a cold opening day for trout season. 04-08-07 Strong hatches of Black Caddis along with good stream conditions are offering fine early season fly fishing on Pine. Black and Early Brown Stone Flies are still active. Actually Pine is a little low for this time of year. 04-08-07 Low 40's water temperatures keeping fishing on the runs slow. Brook Trout seem to be the most cooperative. 04-01-07 Pine is at the high side of fly fishing. Clarity is good, temperatures a little low, but is finally ready. The Pine Creek Stocking Club will put in their first stocking this week end. If you would like to see some nice fish and give us a hand, show up at the hotel parking lot at 1:00 PM Saturday. Lure fishermen have been reporting good activity and nice fish. 03-29-07 Pine is dropping and nearly a level that you could fly fish it. I am sure that you could find a few spots to fish today. Lure fishermen are doing fairly well. Fish close to the banks and out of the current. The Pine Creek Stocking Club will stock this coming Saturday. If you would like to help, meet at the hotel at 1:00 PM 03-29-07 Spring is really on it's way. The grass is starting to turn green, bears are out of hibernation and the Blue birds are looking for nesting boxes. 03-23-07 The Pine Creek Stocking club has postponed stocking the delayed Harvest this Saturday because of high water. The new date is Saturday March 31st. at 1:00 PM. Meet at the Hotel. Stocking will follow the Slate Run Sportsmen meeting. 03-18-07 Pine started to drop and clear today. There is a lot of snow to melt and make it down the stream starting about Thursday. Warm temperatures should arrive on the week end. I do not think that the snow will last long with the warming weather predictions. Stocking is scheduled on the 26th. 03-17-07 8 to 10 inches of snow fell yesterday and last night. Pine is starting to fall, but warming weather predicted for this coming week will keep them very high. Any fishing is weeks away. The Delayed Harvest on Pine Creek was stocked
early this week. The shop stocking will not take place until the high waters
settle down. At least another week. The Morris Coop Nursery also has promised
fish for the Delayed Harvest Area. The March Trade-In is in full swing.
Donate a closed faced spinng out fit or any usable
out-fit and we will deduct 20% percent off the list price of any rod , reel , line or the whole outfit. The trade-ins go to
Camp Victory. A camp for children with childhood medical problems.
Showers are predicted today. It is overcast as I write this report. The showers are keeping the stream levels some what stable, although Pine appears to be dropping faster than the runs. Probably up stream influence. Lots of nymphs on the rocks on all streams indicate good hatches in the future. Hendrickson's should appear in the next week, unless we get a major weather change and cool the stream temperatures down. Fishing on the runs the last couple of days was very satisfying. Not large fish, but good activity. The water is low for this time of year, but at a great level to fish. Pine also looks very good with lots of surface activity during the warm afternoons. Generally we do not have such good conditions this early in the season. The March trade in is rapidly approaching! For
those of you that are not familiar with the trade in, it offers you the
chance to save some money and help out some very young brave people. During
the month of March, if you bring good
serviceable fishing equipment to the shop, you can receive a trade in
allowance of 20 % on your purchase of Rods, reels, line, vests and wading
equipment. Example: A rod for a rod, a reel for a reel or an outfit for
waders and vests. If you do not have equipment for the trade, a blister
packed closed faced spinning outfit from one of the big box stores is
perfect! All trade ins will be donated to Be a member of the Pine Creek stocking club Each year we have stocked a very high quality German brown Trout. These trout come from a hatchery south of Coudersport and are well above normal hatchery quality. For those of you who have caught them in the past, we don't need to elaborate on their quality. The membership is $10.00 per year. Many people and business have made larger donations in the past to help the program. The memberships and 2006 pins are available at the store.
Heavy rains on Pine is in prime condition. Lots of big fish and plenty of fly activity. The next few days are predicted to have good weather. A near perfect situation to bring in the summer hatches. The continuing daily event of thunder
storms has made fishing on Pine most difficult this year. The good news is
that the aquatic activity is bouncing back to normal conditions and the trout
population is well above what we would expect. Of course the 400 large Brown
Trout that the Pine Creek Stocking Club put in had a big impact on the local
populations. Mark and Angie would like to thank all of the fine people who have been supporting them since the fire at the Hotel. The over whelming response that they received at the May 22nd "get together", that was organized by Tom and Jackie Meyers, was just what the doctor ordered. They announced that they will have an addition to their family and that they will be back with the new "Hotel Manor" as soon as possible. Again , Mark and Angie would like to express their gratitude to every one who has supported them through this most challenging period of time. 5-03-04 The runs fished moderately well on the headwaters sections down to the mid sections. Blue Quill still active, Quill Gordon may be coming to an end and Hendrickson still active. Tan Caddis working well. Pine was more sporadic over the week end. Some good reports on Hendrickson's and Blue Quill's. Hendrickson emergers fished behind a sparkle dun produced well. Heavy Caddis activity over most of the stream. A tan caddis with a metallic green egg-sac was probably the most active caddis. Water started to raise rapidly with the late Sunday afternoon storm. Very strong Caddis hatches the last couple of days. Tan Caddis With the metallic green egg sac and the Medium Olive Caddis are in numbers that you would have expected 20 years ago. Fish are responding to the adult egg layers, but I would imagine that most of the feeding is under water. These next few hatches of caddis usually present a lot of frustration for the less experienced fly fisher. We have lots of bugs, so this is your chance to hone up on and insect that we have not had in good numbers in many years. The weekend looks good at this point. Weather predictions including showers and thunder storms remain in the forecast. Water levels and clarity is good. Temperatures remain in the mid to upper 50's. The hatch activity is much improved this year over the past few years. The next two weeks will tell the real story as the mid season flies start coming off. Looks great at this point. If you like fly fishing, this is the year! Very few fishermen in the area yesterday. a Stream conditions about the same as Tuesday. Thunderstorms rolling through the area could cause a rise in the stream flows, although they have had minimal effect at this point. The weekend fishing looks favorable at this time. Tuesday evening was very good fishing on Pine. Lots of bugs including Blue Quills, Quill Gordon's, Hendrickson's and Gray Caddis. There were other flies, but the ones that I mentioned were in good fishable numbers! Fish were looking up and interested in eating. Hopefully this is going to be the trend for the season. While the water temperatures are cool the best fishing should be during the highest water temperatures of the day. Late afternoon and evening this time of year is usually the best activity. As the Caddis season approaches in another week the best feeding activity seems to shift to earlier in the day. I am starting to think that we are going to have good Caddis hatches this year. They have been very disappointing the last couple of years. May be we are going to make up for the mediocre fishing the last couple of seasons. The small streams fished very well over the weekend. Hatches during the afternoon hours were reported to be very good. Baetis seemed to be the most active, with the Quill Gordon following. Black Stones are also very active. Many fly fishers reported above average surface activity for this time of year. Pine is coming into a very good fly fishing condition, with the flow rates getting down and the stream temperatures improving. Another fishing season is fast approaching and the water conditions appear to be cooperating. Although we had lots of snow and ice, the melt down was very controlled for most of us. The exception was an area from the Gibson Hotel up stream to the Bonnell Run area. Some properties along this stretch received damage as ice jams caused very high water until the stream was free of ice. Most other areas experienced a very limited run off. Freezing temperatures at night and thawing during the day allowed for most of the melt to soak in to the ground. Even most of the anchor ice melted instead of disrupting the bottom of the stream. Both insects and fish should have survived this spring condition very well and the ground water conditions should be greatly improved. We have received many reports of above average Black Stone Fly hatches this spring. Many of the insects crawling out of the stream along a narrow area along the shore lines where the ice melted, but the rest of the stream remained covered with ice. Hopefully the rest of the aquatic insect life will be in above average numbers. As the season came to an end early last winter, the trout population remained very good. Those few fishermen that did fish last fall found numerous nice size heavy trout. Even the Rainbows were colored up and looked like real trout! Upon receiving an E Mail I saw a picture of a beautifully colored Rainbow. Before I had a chance to read it, I already assumed that some one had a great trip to Montana and mailed a picture to me. When I read the mail, I found out that it was a Kettle Creek bow! What a nice surprise. The Babb Creek restoration was completed this past winter. Completion of this most complicated an extensive work project will give new life back to the insects of Pine. With the abundant water that we have had for the past 18 months and the elimination of mine acid, Pine could return to it's glory days as one of the states most prolific aquatic insect producers. Here's hoping! I hope to have the complete restoration listed on this site in the near future. Check the "special" page . Many items are still available. Will have complete update soon. We have had an interesting couple of weeks of fly fishing. Pine has remained in the low 60's and has lots of trout. They are cooperating and feeding on the surface. Their are enough bugs to keep the fish looking up, so all in all, we have had some great summer trout fishing on Pine. The runs have also produced above average summer fly fishing. Water levels have remained at a good level and the fish are spread out over the whole area of the stream. Join the Pine Creek stocking club.
